As a local handyman service, we get invited into homes across Western Mass to solve problems big and small — and every visit reminds me that we’re all in the same boat as homeowners.

Here are a few recent projects that really stood out.

1. The Mother-Son Dream Team and Their Victorian Revival

Recently, I met a mother-and-son landlord duo who had recently finished renovating a stunning Victorian home — now easily the nicest building on the street.

They needed help solving a shower issue: water spilling out every time their tenants took a shower. The customer provided the solution and asked us to install a glass door system she purchased. We installed a custom glass shower enclosure to contain the water and preserve their newly rehabbed bathroom. It was a challenging job — I underestimated the time since the metal frame needed precision custom cuts — but the end result was worth it. The shower looked beautiful, and the homeowners & tenants were thrilled (and even left a tip!).

Frankly, most handymen would had to walk away from this one - and that’s what makes us special. We’ve got great critical thinking skills and a large van full of helpful tools to get the job done right.

2. Budget-Friendly Curb Appeal Makeover

Another project involved a very kind homeowner who wanted to freshen up her home’s exterior. She was doing a full curb appeal rehab: removing old aluminum awnings, taking down outdated shutters, power washing, waterproofing, and installing brand-new shutters. She came up with the whole idea herself - what a great idea for a value refresh.

For around $1,200, the house got a whole new look — bright, clean, and welcoming. My helper Gavin handled the power washing, and together we transformed the property in just a couple of days. It’s amazing what a few updates can do for the overall look and feel of a home.

According to a National Realtors Association 2023 Remodeling Impact Report, curb appeal improvements reportedly have about a 217% cost recovery, meaning the payback can exceed the cost if you sell your home.

3. Solving the Mystery Leak

Then there was a husband-and-wife team who noticed that dreaded brown water stain on their ceiling. After ruling out the roof, they suspected the upstairs shower. Sure enough, the contractor who had remodeled it 5 years ago had used the wrong materials — causing premature grout failure.

We removed all the old grout and silicone, replaced them with the correct materials, and sealed the shower properly. With the right products in place, the bathroom is now watertight again. Tracking down leaks can be one of the toughest jobs — they often have multiple possible sources — but with good communication and the homeowners’ help, we found the problem quickly.

4. Hanging a Picture (“you might need a step stool”)

Sometimes, even the smallest jobs turn out to be the most surprising. A client recently asked me to hang a picture — simple enough, right? Until I saw where it needed to go: Let’s just say the 26-foot ladder earned its keep that day!

Jobs like that remind me what being a handyman is really about — helping people with the projects they can’t (or don’t want to) tackle themselves. No job too small, no height too tall.
